Mock 3 — Listening
The whole Listening paper under exam conditions. Every recording is played twice, exactly as in the exam; nothing is checked as you go, the transcripts stay closed, and when you have finished you hand the paper in — every part is marked at once. Only then does the support open, with the transcripts, for the debrief and the redo.

This is the exam-conditions mock: nothing is checked until you hand in, and the clock starts on your first answer.
Part 1 · Questions 1–5
Five short recordings
For each question, choose the correct answer. You will hear each recording twice. Para cada pergunta, escolha a resposta certa. Cada gravação toca duas vezes.
The recording is being made this weekend. Under exam conditions the transcript stays closed until you hand in, so until the audio arrives, ask someone to read this part to you from the recording script (mocks/scripts/a2-mock3-listening.md) at normal speed, twice — or wait for the recording. Do not open the transcript first: on this mock that is the exam.
1
You will hear two friends talking about a film. What time does the film start?
C 7.45 Quarter past seven is last week’s time — “that was last week, they’ve changed it”. Half past seven is when he tells her to arrive, because of the queue. The new start is quarter to eight, and she repeats it. Three times, three jobs.
2
You will hear a woman buying some plants. How much does she pay?
B £5.00 Four fifty is the price of one; six fifty is two before the student card; a pound off each makes five. The answer is never said as a starting price — it is the result of the discount, and the assistant says it last.
3
You will hear a boy talking to his mother. Where is his father?
C In the garage The kitchen is where he was; the garden is Mum’s first guess, taken back with “no, wait”. Then she hears the radio: “He’s in the garage.” The answer is the third place, after two corrections. Cozinha é o passado; jardim é o chute retirado. Garagem é onde ele está.
4
You will hear an announcement in a supermarket. What is cheaper today?
B Fish “Today only, all fresh fish is half price.” Bread is “as usual” — fresh, not cheap — and apples are “back to their normal price”, which means the offer is over. Both wrong options are in the announcement, and both are about price without being cheaper.
5
You will hear a girl talking about her holiday. How did she travel there?
A By car “We were going to fly” — going to is a plan that did not happen. “So we drove” is what did. The train belongs to her aunt, who got there first. Three ways of travelling, one for the plan, one for the aunt, one for her. “Were going to” é plano desfeito. Ela foi de carro; o trem é da tia.

Part One. There are five questions in this part. For each question, choose the correct answer. You will hear each recording twice.
One. You will hear two friends talking about a film.
GIRL: The film’s at quarter past seven, isn’t it?
BOY: That was last week. They’ve changed it — it’s quarter to eight now. Get there by half past seven, the queue’s always long.
GIRL: Quarter to eight. OK. See you at half past.
Two. You will hear a woman buying some plants.
ASSISTANT: The big ones are four pounds fifty each, or six pounds fifty for two.
WOMAN: Two, please. Oh — I’ve got a student card. Does that help?
ASSISTANT: It does. That’s a pound off each, so five pounds, please.
WOMAN: Lovely. Here’s a ten.
Three. You will hear a boy talking to his mother.
BOY: Mum, where’s Dad? He said he’d help me with my bike.
MOTHER: He was in the kitchen making coffee. Try the garden — no, wait, I can hear him. He’s in the garage, with the radio on.
Four. You will hear an announcement in a supermarket.
ANNOUNCER: Good morning, shoppers. Today only, all fresh fish is half price at the counter by the entrance. Fresh bread is baked every hour, as usual, and apples are back to their normal price after last week’s offer.
Five. You will hear a girl talking about her holiday.
GIRL: We were going to fly, but Dad looked at the prices and said no. So we drove — twelve hours, with my brother being sick twice. My aunt came by train and she was there before us. Next time I’m going with her.
Now listen again.
[The five recordings are repeated.]
That is the end of Part One.
Nothing is marked until you hand in. · Nada é corrigido até entregar.

How to read this part. · Como ler esta parte. If this part went badly, here is what usually happened: you heard the word from an option and stopped listening. In Part 1 all three options are said out loud in twenty seconds, and the first thing you hear is very often the old time, the plan that changed, the price before the discount. Listen for what the question asks — which time now, how much in the end — not for the word.
Do it in this order. · Nesta ordem.
Read the question and the three options in the pause, before the recording starts.
First listening: mark the option you think is right, lightly. Na primeira vez, marque em lápis.
Second listening: check the two you did not choose and find the reason each one is wrong.
Never leave a question blank — one of three is always worth a guess.
On this paper every wrong option was said out loud with a job of its own: last week’s time, the price of one, the place Dad was, the offer that ended, the journey that was going to happen. The words to wait for were now, so, wait, today only. In the redo, listen for those. As palavras que decidem: “now”, “so”, “wait”, “today only”.
On each question. · Em cada pergunta. The help for the ones you missed is now attached to the question itself — the options that cannot be right are crossed out, and the place to look is marked.
When you are ready: · Quando estiver pronto: do the whole task again with the support open, then press Check. After that you can clear it and do it once more on your own — that last one is the one that counts for you.
Part 2 · Questions 6–10
Complete the notes
You will hear a woman telling people about a cookery class at a community centre. Write one word, a number or a time in each gap. You will hear the recording twice.

Cookery class — notes
Day: 6 ______ evenings
Starts at: 7 ______
Teacher: Mrs 8 ______
Cost: £9 ______ a week
Bring: an 10 ______
6
6 Day: … evenings
Wednesday “It’s on Wednesday evenings — we did think about Thursdays, but the hall is used for badminton then.” Thursday is the day they did not choose, and it comes second — the one time on this paper where the wrong answer is said after the right one. Spell it with the silent d: W-e-d-n-e-s-d-a-y. Quinta é o dia descartado. Quarta = Wednesday, com o “d” mudo.
7
7 Starts at:
6.45 (or: quarter to seven) “Starts at quarter to seven and finishes at nine.” Two times; the note wants the start. Quarter to seven is 6.45, not 7.15 — to means before the hour. That reversal is the commonest A2 slip with times. “Quarter to seven” = seis e quarenta e cinco. “To” é antes da hora.
8
8 Teacher: Mrs …
Pearce She spells it: P-E-A-R-C-E. It sounds like piers and could be written five ways — that is exactly why it is spelled aloud, and why the spelling is the answer. Ela soletra porque o som não diz a grafia. P-E-A-R-C-E.
9
9 Cost: £ … a week
12 (or: twelve) “Twelve pounds a week, and that includes all the food.” The word twenty is in the recording too — “twenty years” at the café — and twelve and twenty are the pair that A2 candidates mix up most. Listen for the ending: -elve, not -enty.
10
10 Bring: an …
apron Knives and pans are named first — to say you do not need them. “But please bring an apron, because it gets messy.” The note says an, so the word starts with a vowel — that alone rules out knives and pans.

Part Two. You will hear a woman telling people about a cookery class at a community centre. For each question, write the correct answer in the gap. Write one word, or a number, or a time. You will hear the recording twice.
[pause 20s — look at the notes]
WOMAN: Thank you for coming, everyone. The cookery class starts next week, and it’s on Wednesday evenings — we did think about Thursdays, but the hall is used for badminton then.
WOMAN: It starts at quarter to seven and finishes at nine.
WOMAN: The teacher is Mrs Pearce, that’s P-E-A-R-C-E. She ran the café by the station for twenty years, so you’re in good hands.
WOMAN: The class costs twelve pounds a week, and that includes all the food — you take home what you cook.
WOMAN: You don’t need to bring knives or pans, we’ve got all of that, but please bring an apron, because it gets messy.
WOMAN: If you have any questions, ring the centre. See you on Wednesday.
Now listen again.

How to read this part. · Como ler esta parte. If this part went badly, the usual reason is one of three: you wrote the first thing you heard (Thursday, knives), you wrote a time the wrong way round (quarter to seven), or you spelled a name by ear when it was spelled for you. The notes tell you what kind of answer each gap wants — decide that in the pause, and write only what is missing.
Do it in this order. · Nesta ordem.
In the pause, read the five gaps and write day / time / name / price / thing next to each one.
First listening: write something in every gap, even if you are not sure. Na primeira vez, preencha tudo.
Second listening: check, and listen for what she spells or says twice.
Read the note back with your word in it. Does the whole line make sense — does “an” fit your word? Releia a linha inteira com sua palavra.
Two traps on this paper were about sound, not meaning: twelve against twenty, and quarter to against quarter past. If either was yours, the fix is five minutes a day saying times and numbers aloud — this is a skill on its own, separate from listening. Duas armadilhas eram de som: “twelve/twenty” e “to/past”.
On each question. · Em cada pergunta. The help for the ones you missed is now attached to the question itself — the options that cannot be right are crossed out, and the place to look is marked.

Part 3 · Questions 11–15
A longer conversation
You will hear Nila talking to Tom about learning to swim. For each question, choose the correct answer. You will hear the conversation twice.
11
How old was Tom when he learned to swim?
A Sixty-one Nila says sixty; Tom corrects her — “sixty-one, if we’re being honest.” Five is his grandson’s age. The correction is quiet and it is the answer; the number in the question is the trap. Nila diz sessenta; Tom corrige. Cinco é a idade do neto.
12
Why did Tom decide to learn?
B His grandson wanted to swim with him “Everyone thinks the doctor told me to. He didn’t. It was Femi.” The doctor is named first and then removed in two words. The wife is in the conversation only as someone who learned as a girl. O médico é citado e descartado em duas palavras. Foi o Femi.
13
What did Tom find most difficult?
C Putting his face in the water “Not the cold — the pool’s warm. And the other people were kind.” Two options closed, in order, and then: “It was putting my face in the water.” Three weeks of blowing bubbles is the proof.
14
When does Tom go swimming now?
A On Tuesday and Friday mornings “Every Tuesday and Friday, seven in the morning.” Saturday is the day he tried and gave up — “it was all children”. The word every is in the answer, but it is “every Tuesday and Friday”, not every day.
15
What does Tom want to do next?
B Swim in the sea “People say I should do a race. No — I’m going to swim in the sea at Whitby next summer, with Femi.” The race is other people’s idea, answered with “No”. Femi can already swim; Tom wants to swim with him, not teach him. A corrida é ideia dos outros. Femi já sabe nadar — Tom quer nadar junto.

Part Three. You will hear Nila talking to Tom about learning to swim. For each question, choose the correct answer. You will hear the conversation twice.
[pause 20s — read the five questions]
NILA: Tom, you learned to swim last year — at sixty!
TOM: Sixty-one, if we’re being honest. My wife learned when she was a girl, and my grandson learned at five. I was the only one in the family who couldn’t.
NILA: Why did you finally do it?
TOM: Everyone thinks the doctor told me to. He didn’t. It was Femi. We were on the beach at Whitby and he wanted to go in, and I couldn’t go with him. That was enough.
NILA: What was the hardest part?
TOM: Not the cold — the pool’s warm. And the other people were kind. It was putting my face in the water. I couldn’t do it for three weeks. The teacher had me blowing bubbles like a child.
NILA: How often do you go now?
TOM: Every Tuesday and Friday, seven in the morning, before the pool gets busy. I tried Saturdays and it was all children.
NILA: And what’s next?
TOM: People say I should do a race. No — I’m going to swim in the sea at Whitby next summer, with Femi. Just to the rocks and back. That’s the whole plan.

The five questions follow the conversation in order; hold each one until the correction has come. Ele sempre diz o esperado e desfaz. Segure a pergunta até a correção chegar.

The hardest item here was the first: Nila says “sixty” in the question and Tom says “sixty-one” in a half-voice. If you chose B, you answered from the question, not from Tom. On the redo, treat everything the interviewer says as a guess to be checked.

Part 4 · Questions 16–20
Five people talking
You will hear five short recordings. For each question, choose the correct answer. You will hear each recording twice. Cinco pessoas diferentes, cinco assuntos diferentes.
The recording is being made this weekend. Under exam conditions the transcript stays closed until you hand in, so until the audio arrives, ask someone to read this part to you from the recording script (mocks/scripts/a2-mock3-listening.md) at normal speed, twice — or wait for the recording. 16
You will hear a man talking about his new job. What does he like about it?
A The people Money “about the same”, hours he hates — both closed in the first sentence. “But the people…” and then the story of his second day. “That’s why I stay” is the sentence that answers the question, and it is the last one. Dinheiro igual, horário odiado. Depois do “but” vêm as pessoas.
17
You will hear a woman talking about a restaurant. What was wrong with it?
B The service was slow The food was “hot, and lots of it”; it was “quiet enough to talk”. Both good. “But we waited fifty minutes for the first plate” — the wait is the complaint, and she says the number twice. Comida quente, lugar tranquilo. O problema é a espera de cinquenta minutos.
18
You will hear a girl talking about a sport she plays. Why did she start playing it?
B A teacher suggested it “None of my friends do it, and I’d never seen it on television” — A and C are closed in the first sentence, in that order. Then Miss Owen, the PE teacher: “You should try cricket.”
19
You will hear a man on the radio talking about a walk. What should people bring?
C Good shoes “You won’t need a map” — the path is signed. Drinks are at the café halfway, so nobody needs to carry water. The last mile is rocks: “Proper shoes, please.” The one instruction is the last sentence. Mapa não precisa; água tem no café. Sapato bom é a única ordem.
20
You will hear a boy leaving a message for his grandad. Why is he calling?
A To say thank you “I don’t need anything” closes B before it opens. The rest is about the watch and how it worked, and then “Thank you. That’s all.” Nobody is invited anywhere. “I don’t need anything” fecha o pedido de ajuda. A mensagem é um obrigado.

Part Four. There are five questions in this part. For each question, choose the correct answer. You will hear each recording twice.
Sixteen. You will hear a man talking about his new job.
MAN: The money’s about the same as before, and I start at seven, which I hate. But the people — I’ve never worked anywhere where everybody helps everybody. I had a problem on my second day and three people came over. That’s why I stay.
Seventeen. You will hear a woman talking about a restaurant.
WOMAN: The food was lovely when it came — hot, and lots of it — and it was quiet enough to talk, which I liked. But we waited fifty minutes for the first plate. Fifty! The children were eating the bread basket.
Eighteen. You will hear a girl talking about a sport she plays.
GIRL: None of my friends do it, and I’d never seen it on television. Miss Owen, our PE teacher, saw me throw a ball one day and said, “You should try cricket.” I said girls don’t play cricket. She said, “I did.” So I went.
Nineteen. You will hear a man on the radio talking about a walk.
MAN: It’s only five miles and the path is well signed, so you won’t need a map. There’s a café at the halfway point for drinks. But the last mile is rocks, and every year somebody does it in sandals and we have to carry them. Proper shoes, please.
Twenty. You will hear a boy leaving a message for his grandad.
BOY: Grandad, it’s Femi. I don’t need anything — I just wanted to say the watch is brilliant. I wasn’t late once this week. Thank you. That’s all. Bye!

How to read this part. · Como ler esta parte. If this part went badly, the usual reason is that you decided in the first sentence. Each of these is one person making one point, and on this paper the first sentence was always the other two options being put away — the money, the food, the friends, the map, the help he does not need. The point comes after the turn, usually last. Aqui a primeira frase sempre descartava as outras duas opções.
Do it in this order. · Nesta ordem.
In the pause, read the question first, then the three options. Pergunta primeiro, opções depois.
First listening: wait for the last sentence before you decide. Espere a última frase antes de marcar.
Second listening: find the sentence that made you choose. If you cannot find one, change your answer.
Do not choose an option just because you heard its words. Ouvir a palavra não é achar a resposta.
Count the turns: “But the people”, “But we waited”, “But the last mile”, “I don’t need anything”. Four of the five answers sit right after a word that changes direction. If you missed two or more here, practise this one thing: on every short recording, write down the word that turned it.
On each question. · Em cada pergunta. The help for the ones you missed is now attached to the question itself — the options that cannot be right are crossed out, and the place to look is marked. Part 5 · Questions 21–25
Matching — five people, eight answers
You will hear Nila telling Tom what her colleagues are bringing to a party at the radio station. For each person, choose the correct answer A–H. There are three extra answers you will not need. Oito opções, cinco pessoas: três sobram.
What is each person bringing?
A drinks · B fruit · C a cake · D biscuits
E bread · F crisps · G cheese · H sandwiches
21
Dan
C a cake Tom guesses crisps — “he always brings crisps” — and Nila answers “Not this time.” Then the cake, with a doubt attached (“we’ll see”), which does not change the answer. Crisps is the trap, said twice, and it is Tom’s guess, not the fact. Batata frita é o chute do Tom, dito duas vezes. “Not this time” desfaz o chute.
22
Priya
G cheese “Priya’s on the cheese.” Nothing else is offered for her — the only thing to catch is that on the cheese means in charge of bringing it, and that “a big piece of something from Somerset” is the cheese, not another food. “On the cheese” = encarregada do queijo. O “something from Somerset” é o queijo.
23
Marcus
B fruit “Marcus wanted to bring drinks, but Jo’s already doing those, so he’s bringing fruit instead.” Wanting is not bringing; instead is the word that swaps them. Drinks belong to the next person. Ele queria trazer bebidas; “instead” troca por frutas. Bebidas são da Jo.
24
Jo
A drinks Jo’s answer arrives inside Marcus’s — “Jo’s already doing those” — and is then confirmed twice: “So Jo’s doing the drinks.” “Jo’s doing the drinks.” The one answer on this part that is said three times. A resposta da Jo aparece dentro da do Marcus e é confirmada duas vezes.
25
Sam
E bread Sandwiches is the plan that failed — “the shop was shut” — and “so now he’s bringing bread from the bakery and we’ll make our own.” Now marks the change, and the sandwiches will be made at the party, not brought. Sanduíche era o plano que falhou. “Now” marca a troca: pão da padaria.

Part Five. You will hear Nila telling Tom what her colleagues are bringing to a party at the radio station. For questions twenty-one to twenty-five, choose the correct answer, A to H. You will hear the conversation twice.
[pause 20s — read the eight options]
NILA: We’re having a party at the station on Friday. Everyone’s bringing something.
TOM: Let me guess — Dan’s bringing crisps. He always brings crisps.
NILA: Not this time. He said he’d make his mother’s cake. Actually make it. We’ll see.
TOM: And Priya?
NILA: Priya’s on the cheese. Her uncle has a shop, so she’s getting a big piece of something from Somerset.
TOM: Marcus?
NILA: Marcus wanted to bring drinks, but Jo’s already doing those, so he’s bringing fruit instead — grapes and strawberries, if the market has them.
TOM: So Jo’s doing the drinks.
NILA: Jo’s doing the drinks. And Sam from the front desk said he’d get sandwiches, but the shop was shut, so now he’s bringing bread from the bakery and we’ll make our own.

Espere “not this time”, “instead”, “so now”.
Do it in this order. · Nesta ordem.
In the pause, read the eight options so that none of them is new when you hear it. Leia as oito opções na pausa.
First listening: write a letter next to every person, even a guess.
Cross out each letter as you use it — a letter is used only once.
Second listening: check the people you guessed, and listen for wanted to, instead and now. Na segunda vez, cace “wanted to”, “instead” e “now”.
Three answers are never used, and two of them — crisps and sandwiches — are said out loud, as things that did not happen. If you gave Dan the crisps or Sam the sandwiches, you matched a word to a person; the exam wanted a fact.
What this paper told you
The marks below are from the hand-in, or from your best unaided redo of a part after the debrief.
0parts done · partes feitas
—marks, best unaided attempt · pontos, melhor tentativa sozinho
0parts where you opened the support · partes em que você abriu o apoio
A listening paper under exam conditions tells you one thing the other mocks cannot: whether you can hold a question in your head while the recording moves on. If a part fell, open its support, read the transcript with your finger on the but and the not, play it once more with the transcript, then once more without.
