Mock 3 — Reading and Writing

The whole Reading and Writing paper under exam conditions. Nothing is checked as you go, the clock starts on your first answer, and when you have finished you hand the paper in — every part is marked at once. Only then does the support open, for the debrief: read what went wrong on a part, do it again with the help, then once more alone. Como na prova: nada é conferido no caminho, o relógio começa na primeira resposta, e no fim você entrega. Só então o apoio abre — para o balanço, o refazer com ajuda e o refazer sozinho.

Part 2 · Questions 7–13

Three people, seven questions

Three people write about a British festival they went to. For each question, choose A, B or C. Três pessoas, sete perguntas. Uma pessoa pode ser a resposta mais de uma vez.

A festival I went to — three people

A · Marta, 27, London. I have lived in London for six years and I had never been to the Notting Hill Carnival, so this August I finally went. The music is the reason people go — there are sound systems on every corner — but for me it was the food. I ate jerk chicken from a stall and it was the best thing I have eaten all year. The streets were so full that I could hardly move, and after three hours I had had enough of that. I got home at midnight with my ears still ringing.

B · Dev, 44, Somerset. Our village fête is the same every year, and that is the point. I go because I run the cake stall — my wife bakes, I sell. It took me four hours to set up the tent on Saturday morning, and then it rained for most of the afternoon. It didn’t matter. The vicar judged the vegetable competition, the children did their dance, and we sold every cake by three. I have done it for eleven years and I will do it next year.

C · Callum, 19, Glasgow. Hogmanay is New Year in Scotland, and Edinburgh does it bigger than anywhere. My sister and I took the train through and it was so full we stood the whole way. At midnight there were fireworks over the castle and a hundred thousand people singing. I even saw a footballer from Celtic in the crowd — I didn’t say anything, but I know it was him. Next year I want to try the fire festival in Shetland, which is in January and even colder.

7
Who went to the festival for the first time?
8
Who went to the festival because of a job they do there?
9
Who had an uncomfortable journey?
10
Who got tired of the crowds?
11
Who says the weather did not spoil the day?
12
Who saw a famous person?
13
Who is planning to go to a different festival next year?

The postwoman who goes by boat

Every weekday morning at half past seven, Morag Sinclair walks down to the harbour in a small town on the west coast of Scotland, unties a boat that is not much bigger than a car, and crosses to the island of Rona. The crossing takes fifteen minutes when the sea is flat. Morag has been doing it for twenty-two years, and she is the only post on the island.

Rona has forty-one people, a church, a school with six children in it, and no shop. So the boat carries more than letters. Islanders phone Morag the night before and she brings bread, newspapers, a birthday cake, medicine from the chemist. “I’m not really a postwoman,” she says. “I’m the island’s legs.”

The hard part is not the work but the winter. From November it is dark at four, and the sea between the town and the island can change in an hour. There are days when Morag looks at the water and does not go. “The island understands,” she says. “Nobody has ever complained about a late letter. They complain if I go out when I shouldn’t.”

Two years ago the post company decided that the boat was too expensive and that Rona’s post could go by drone instead. The islanders wrote forty-one letters, one each, and sent them by the boat. The plan was dropped. “A drone can carry a parcel,” Morag says. “It can’t tell you who’s ill.”

The school on Rona now has seven children. The seventh is Morag’s grandson, and he wants the boat when she stops. She says he can have it — in about twenty years.

14
What do we learn about Morag’s journey in the first paragraph?
15
Why does the boat carry more than letters?
16
What does Morag say about the islanders in the third paragraph?
17
How was the drone plan stopped?
18
What would be the best title for the whole text?

  • Organisation · It starts and ends like a message to a teacher (Dear Mrs Bell… / Best wishes). Abertura e fechamento de e-mail para professora.
  • Organisation · My sentences are joined with because, so or and, not just put one after another. Frases ligadas, não soltas.

What this paper told you

The marks below are from the hand-in, or from your best unaided redo of a part after the debrief. The time you took is next to the button. A nota abaixo é da entrega, ou do melhor refazer sem ajuda depois do balanço. O tempo que você levou está ao lado do botão.

Read the time first. Sixty minutes for seven parts is nine minutes a part with a few spare — if you went over, the fix is Part 4 and Part 5, which should take five minutes each, not the reading parts. Then open the support on the two parts that fell furthest and redo them tonight. Olhe o tempo primeiro. Se passou de sessenta minutos, o conserto está nas partes 4 e 5, que devem levar cinco minutos cada. Depois refaça hoje as duas partes que mais caíram.
